Boxted Airfield Museum

'We believe this heritage is worth preserving'

We has now erected two World War Two style Nissen Huts on Langham Lodge Farm (part of the old airfield site).

One Nissen Hut is the visitor centre, with toilets, refreshment facilities, library and a meeting room.

The second hut is the actual museum, displaying photographs, maps, memorabilia. and telling the story of -

"the most important U.S. fighter base in the U.K. during World War Two"

Roger Freeman

The museum tells the story of the airfield not just wartime but up to the present day. We have been given permission to use two exclusive sets of private photographs that are not on display any where else in the U.K.; these collections amount to 300 personal photos some in colour (very rare in WW2)

Also on display are artefacts from the airfield and local peoples memories of the airfield in pictures and audio recordings. During opening times we will be we will be showing film of the airfield in action during WW2.

The museum opens the last Sunday of every month from march to October inclusive.

Admission is £2 Children free.

There are refreshments and a souvenir shop. Full disabled access.

The main displays relate to the airfield history and artefacts from WW2. There are also exhibits and photos of local Home Guard and Royal Observer Corps.

Boxted after the war covers the time the Nissen huts were used by local residents waiting for council houses. There is a section on Wing Commander Percy Hatfield and his crop spraying business.

The museum can be opened at other times for private visits and we visit local schools and organisations to give talks.
